A comforting South Indian millet dish cooked in buttermilk and finished with a simple ghee tempering.

Cooking Steps

Barnyard Maheri

Step 1 :

Clean the barnyard millet and shama rice thoroughly. Soak and boil them together for 30 minutes until soft.

Step 2 :

Strain excess water and cook the mixture in buttermilk until well done. Add salt to taste.

Step 3 :

Heat ghee in a thick-bottomed pan. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.

Step 4 :

Add green chilli and curry leaves, sauté briefly.

Step 5 :

Pour this seasoning over the cooked millet–rice mixture, cover with a lid for a short time.

Step 6 :

Mix well and serve hot.
