Gujarati Dal Dhokli

Experience the comforting flavours of Gujarat with this Dal Dhokli, a hearty and wholesome dish where tender wheat pieces blend perfectly with spiced yellow dal.

For the dal:

Step 1 :

To prepare the dhokla, in a large mixing bowl, add the whole wheat flour along with the seasonings and oil. Using little water knead a medium soft dough. Cover with a damp cloth and keep aside.

Step 2 :

Add the soaked arhar dal along with peanuts, turmeric, salt and water in a pressure cooker. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is fully cooked.

Step 3 :

In a kadhai, add the ghee and place on medium heat, add cumin seeds and let it crackle. Now add the cloves, cinnamon stick and asafoetida. Add the tomatoes and let them soften. Now add the red chilli powder and let it cook.

Step 4 :

Add the boiled dal and mix well. Add jaggery and cook for a few minutes.

Step 5 :

In the meantime, make small balls of the prepared dough and roll out rotis of medium thickness. Using a knife cut out small diamond-shaped pieces of the dhokli.

Step 6 :

Add the pieces of dhokla to the boiling dal and let them cook for 2-3 minutes.

Step 7 :

Once the dhokla softens turn off the flame, and add the lemon juice and coriander. Transfer into a serving bowl and drizzle some ghee over it and your tasty Gujarati dal dhokla is ready to serve.
