Pepper Rasam

Pepper Rasam is a variation of spicy rasam made with black pepper, tamarind, tomatoes and other spices that gives a relief during cough and cold.

Step 1 :

Soak tamarind in 1/4th cup of water for 20-25 minutes.

Step 2 :

While the tamarind is soaking, crush black pepper corns, cumin seeds and garlic pieces.

Step 3 :

Heat oil in a vessel, add mustard seeds and let them crackle.

Step 4 :

Meanwhile, squeeze the soaked tamarind to extract the pulp, strain and keep aside.

Step 5 :

Add red chillies and a pinch of hing, stir and saute till the red chillies change colour. Ensure not to burn them.

Step 6 :

Now, add chopped tomato and curry leaves to it.

Step 7 :

Stir and saute till the tomatoes become pulpy and soft. Then, add turmeric powder.

Step 8 :

Add the crushed mixture of black pepper, cumin and garlic. Stir well and add tamarind pulp.

Step 9 :

Add 2 cups of water and salt, stir well.

Step 10 :

Simmer pepper rasam on a low flame till the raw aroma of the tamarind vanishes, cook it for about 9-10 minutes.
