Step 1 :

In a bowl, wash and soak chana dal for 2-3 hours.

Step 2 :

Drain the water from the chan dal and grind it into a fine paste, do not add water.

Step 3 :

Add coriander seeds, crushed black pepper corns, baking soda, fennel seeds and salt to the prepared chana dal paste and mix it well to combine.

Step 4 :

Divide the mixture into 10 equal portions.

Step 5 :

Flatten the chana dal mixture lightly using wet fingers to make a (4 inch diameter) vada of (1/4 inch) thickness.

Step 6 :

Heat oil in a kadhai, slide the vada in the hot oil and deep fry it till light brown colour over a medium flame.

Step 7 :

Cut the vadas into long strips and deep fry again till they are golden brown and crisp.

Step 8 :

Serve it hot with tomato sauce or dahi.
