Step 1 :
Clean prawns well. Remove the vein from the top of the prawn.
Step 2 :
Dice onion and ginger into small pieces.
Step 3 :
Cut green chillies lengthwise.
Step 4 :
Make tamarind juice by squeezing tamarind in 1 cup of water.
Step 5 :
In a pan cook prawns, along with 1 tbsp red chilli powder, salt and tamarind juice. Water should be just enough to cover half the prawns. Allow it to cook well for 7 minutes.
Step 6 :
In another pan, heat oil.
Step 7 :
Add onions, green chillies and ginger, stir it for few minutes till the onions starts to turn brown.
Step 8 :
Now add the remaining red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Stir for 3 minutes or till the raw smell goes away.
Step 9 :
Add the cooked prawns. If there is any water left over in the first pan, add that too into the pan.
Step 10 :
Mix well and cook for another 5 minutes till all the water dries up.
Step 11 :
Yummy prawn ularthiyathu is ready to be served as a starter or as a side dish along with rice or chapatti.
