tastewise good but the moment you open the packet, a chemical smell comes.  so I'm not sure if it is safe to consume.  perhaps this is how they preserve dates for a long time. 

please note that the followin comment/opinion/suggestion is not for annai dates alone:
hence words  like NATURALl etc, which many packagers daringly put on their labels doesn't mean anything.  at least I've started looking at such claims with suspicion .  looks like nothing thats packaged is ever safe .
