What keeps you going strong all through the day? Well, for most Indians it's their 'chai'.

For the Indians, chai is more than just a beverage; it's an emotion. Also, each of us like our chai made in a special way. Many of us like only a specific type of chai. While there are connoisseurs of different varieties of leaf teas, there are few who like their cuppa with a lot of sugar and milk, and a hint of masala.

And why not? India is one of the largest manufacturers of tea in the world. From the delicious Darjeeling tea to the strong Assam tea, we have all.

    Tea Benefits

Tea is considered healthier than coffee, as it has lesser caffeine content. Here are some reasons why you should drink tea every day:

    Contains Antioxidants

The benefits of antioxidants are known to all. They slow down ageing and keep you healthier. Tea contains polyphenols, a type of antioxidant that does not only keep you healthy but also prevent certain types of cancer.

    Contains Less Caffeine

Drinking a considerable amount of caffeine has its own benefits. However, consuming too much of it will be bad for your heart and the other organs. Tea does not contain too much caffeine, and will help you stay awake during boring meetings. At the same time, it won’t make you feel jittery and let you sleep whenever you want.

    Keeps You Hydrated

Till even a few years back, it was thought caffeinated beverages dehydrate you. However, according to recent studies, caffeine doesn't affect your hydration level unless you drink more than 6-7 cups every day. So, if you are drinking lesser than that you are actually helping with your body’s hydration.

    Lowers Stress

Tea helps a lot of people when they are stressed or tensed. Black tea helps in the reduction of stress hormones. Recent research claims that there has been a 20% drop in the level of a stress hormone called cortisol while drinking four cups of black tea every day for a month.

    Makes Your Heart Healthier

Yes, you read it right. Drinking black tea regularly will help in preventing strokes and heart attacks. It does so by preventing the formation of critical blood clots. Black tea keeps your heart healthy, and help reduces heart disease risk. It also lowers bad cholesterol level. A low-fat diet, along with black tea, will help in keeping your cholesterol level in check.

    Types and Grades of Tea

Tea is of different type, starting from black and green tea to oolong and white tea. We will focus on black tea as that is the most common variety.

The tea that you drink at home (or outside) has to go through a lot of steps. Processing tea involves a lot of manual labour, and so the tea can be pretty expensive.

Tea leaves are plucked using hands. Machines aren’t allowed to avoid bruising. A smaller tea leaf has more value than a longer one.

    Tea has the following grades:

    • Whole leaf: Do you like immersing in the taste and aroma of your tea? Then you probably like this variety. Whole leaf tea is the one that is not torn or broken during production. A lot of Darjeeling tea falls under this category.
    • Broken Leaf: Tea leaves are broken or torn but are still recognisable as tea leaves.
    • Fannings: Leaves are finely broken, and this comes with a recognisable texture. Most tea bags contain fanning.
    • Dust: This the tea that you boil with milk and sugar while making at home. It is the same tea that is served in paper cups by the roadside dhabas. Dust tea is nothing but a powder and is hugely popular among the chai lovers.
